All Outlander PHEVs feature one petrol engine and two electric motors. The 2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 88kW and 189Nm, which is low for an engine of this size. It is, however, tuned to be fuel efficient when generating electricity through a generator to power the two 60kW electric motors and charge the 12kW battery. The electric motors do most of the driving for the vehicle, though in rare cases where maximum power is asked for or the battery is low the petrol engine can directly drive the front wheels. The PHEV can be set to drive in electric-only mode, which it will do at up to 120kmh unless maximum acceleration is called for, or run as a hybrid where the car uses a combination of battery power and petrol for the best efficiency. The vehicle can also be set to charge its battery while on the move or idling. Performance is excellent, with lots of torque from the electric engines which means strong acceleration. Under electric power, the Mitsubishi is quiet with little noise, while the engine can get a little noisy when it is required to produce large amounts of energy. The transmission in the Outlander is essentially single-speed due to the electric motors. The transmission shifter is a small joystick, with reverse, neutral and drive functions - and a separate engine braking setting for regenerating energy when you slow or go downhill.
